A few days ago I woke up to find 6 of my listings on the first page of Google (Now 8). Naturally I was pleased and started to do some digging around.

I went through all of the listings that ranked on the first page and tried to determine why they ranked and why others didn't.

To cut a long story short, I started to analyze all of the social properties that had my content and backlink on them.

In total, I analyzed about 18 of the net's top social Connections.

And on each Connection, I had about 4 unique user accounts that promoted my content.

And here's what I found…

After performing some ninja research by analzing IP's and some other fancy checks, I came to see there were 4 sites that stood out from the rest.

I started to notice how despite having multiple user accounts on the same 4 social sites. The actual IP assigned to them were different.

What this means?

It shows when you have multiple user accounts on these 4 social sites then you get backlinks from an array of unique IP addresses just by having a different user account.

Let's take a closer look..,

One of the 4 social sites that I analyzed was Twitter.

I looked at 4 Twitter profiles that had my link on them and ran a few checks. And 3 out of 4 Twitter profiles had a different IP address assigned to it.

Another site that I was already aware of was Tumblr.

I looked at 4 Tumblr blogs that had my link on them and all 4 of them had a unique IP associated to them.

This meant that even though I had 4 links coming from Tumblr and twitter. The actual servers that the backlinks resided on did in fact have different IP's assigned to them.

The other 2 Social sites that I examined had a Google authority Page rank of 9 and 6

I will be sharing these 2 Social sites in my upcoming articles along with further findings that I stumbled upon when performing further analyses. (Not To Be MISSED)

For now let's just say that the site that has a PR9 not only has great authority and multiple unique IP's but it also provides Do-Follow backlinks. And I'm going to be revealing both these sites to you.

Is Amazon SES The Right Choice?

Just before we dive into the Setup process its very important you understand what will be involved. If like myself you are using email service providers such as Aweber then you must be prepared to learn as Amazon does not come configured out of the box and is very different to Aweber, get response etc

We will connect using SMTP or by using a simple API call which then allows us access to Amazons High quality scalable email infrastructure. So its important that you have a self hosted email script which will be able to communicate with Amazon. But its just as important to ensure you have a email system in place that will handle your suppressed email lists such as opt outs, unsubscribes and bounces.

I personally use ArpReach which I have found challenging to configure but am getting there. The reason for moving is simple. Aweber can close you down anytime – I just dont like the idea and 2ndly when you have a large list then you really do need more control. Arpreach allows me to swap my SMTP providers so I can test with Amazon SES and many other SMTP providers and then work with the best one.

A self Hosted autoresponder script such as ArpReach will manage your Email suppression list and all other areas that you can expect from a service provider such as Aweber and when combined with a Good SMTP provider such as Amazon SES then you can expect the same delivery rate if not better and save yourself a whole load of money.

Save Money using Amazon SES not compromising Email Delivery

Services such as Aweber charge you based on the amount of subscribers you have and not based on the amount of emails you send, whereas Amazon SES will charge you for the emails you send and the prices are very reasonable. Lets do a quick comparison.

Aweber will charge you $19.97 a month for up to 500 subscribers (Larger packages also available) Lets say you had 500 subscribers and you emailed them every other day, so about 15 emails to each one over 30 days. This would mean you are sending 15 x 500 emails which equals to 7500 emails in the month.

Comparing Aweber with Amazons SES prices then you will see that Amazon charge you $10 for every 10,000 emails sent – That would be a saving each month of more then half. and if your anything like myself where you send a couple of emails a week at most then you can look to save a nice amount.

Setting Up Amazon SES DKIM, SPF and SenderID

After you have signed up for a Amazon account then follow the verification procedures. You will need to verify the sender email and also your domain. For Email delivery then there are 3 areas that we will need to setup so that we dont get blocked by the major email service providers.

Setting up DKIM

To setup the DKIM settings then you will find that Amazon will supply you with a number of Cname records and 1 TXT record to add to your Domains hosts DNS settings.When logged into your Amazon account then you will find the DNS settings for DKIM on the following page AMAZON DKIM – Just click the DKIM Tab near the domain.

We used hostgator to host our domain which uses Cpanel. Adding the DNS records is simple, just open your advanced DNS settings and make new entries with the ones supplied by Amazon.

Once you have made the changes it could take upto 72 hours for Amazon to confirm that it has been verified. Once verified you should go back to the verified senders section and enable the DKIM settings for Both the Email and the domain.

By enabling the DKIM settings your allowing Amazon to send a  verified signature with the email which tells email providers that this is a legitimate email. You will also see that in your test emails the Sent Via Amazon will no longer show and your emails will now be signed by your own domain.

Setting SPF records

SPF stands for Sender Policy Framework which helps trace the email back to the original source. This helps ISP's ensure emails are valid and not spoofed. 

What we need to do is look for a txt or SPF entry in the advanced DNS Zone editor. SPF records will start with v=spf1, On our hostgator we already had one created as a TXT record which looked like this

v=spf1 +a +mx +ip4:124.100.100.100 ?all

Now we need to add Amazon in this record and the way we do this is by adding include:amazonses.com to the record

After editing the SPF record it now looks like this

v=spf1 +a +mx +ip4:124.100.100.100 include:amazonses.com ?all

Setting SenderID

Many ISP's will mark your email as Spam if you do not setup SenderID.

Setting up sender ID is similar to a SPF record and are usually a TXT record in your DNS settings. The SenderID normally starts like this

spf2.0/pra

We didnt have one created with our host so we created a new TXT entry to include our own host and Amazon SES.

Our SenderID TXT entry looked like this

spf2.0/pra +a +mx +ip4:124.100.100.100 include:amazonses.com ?all

That's it your done setting up the verification. Now all you need to do is test the emails and make sure all is working fine.

After Viewing the demographics we know the majority of users on Pinterest are women so to truly take advantage of the Pinterest community we need to try and tweak our marketing approach so that it works better for the community at large which is women.

If for example you are marketing Mens clothing or even packs to help you stop smoking where the wider audience is men then tweaking your approach will help conversions.

So instead of a Normal approach trying to catch the attention of smokers you would instead try and catch the attention of women who have partners that smoke- So maybe something like " Tired of your partners Bad breath? Help him quit smoking" or something along them lines. The idea to take away from this is that we should try and engage with the community at large and tailor our marketing methods to the wider crowd.

Some will argue that micro targeting gives the best return. This is true but having a social presence is more important then ever. You will find that working the social communities will not only send direct traffic from the social sites but it will also encourage users to share and be vocal about your product and even increase your social signals which is a must for todays Search Engine Optimization.

As marketers we always want to make notes of our products, pitch whenever we get the opportunity and close deals any time we can. Tumblr is a free Micro Blogging platform that gets over 119 million visitors per a month and over 14 Billion page views. It is one of the fastest growing Social Media websites today and has millions of active users.

What this means is that when your post gets re-blogged by another Tumblr user then the link back to your own TumbleLog is do-follow. This will then increase the Page rank of your own tumblelog. You can then enter linkbacks to your own sites from your Tumblelog which will increase your search engine rankings and also your page authority.

On the 24th of April 2012 Google released an update to their search engine algorithms. Google named it the Penguin Update. This update is set to target Webspam and certain Black hat techniques that are commonly used to trick the search engines for gaining higher search engine rankings. 

Google makes the following Notes “The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines”.

The Google Penguin update is said to effect about 3.1 percent of search queries. Taking this figure and comparing it to the previous update (Google Panda) which effected about 12 percent of search queries then its clear that this update is smaller then the last.

So what's changed with Google in the Penguin Update?

Google never disclose the full details of their changes but they do give us slight indications. Some I cover below and others are based on my findings and the findings of many intelligent strategists and active professionals in the Internet Marketing and Search Engine Optimization Niche.

Authority Sites take a larger share

The first point I would like to note is how Google has started to give more top result spots to Authority sites such as Amazon. This has of course effected many Affiliate marketers and smaller businesses who are looking to remain competitive in the search engines using Organic methods. There is much frustration amongst webmasters due to the adverse effects that  the Penguin update has had on their sites. 

Lets look at some areas that have been effected 

Offsite Optimization effects

Offsite Optimization as we know is everything related to your Domain away from your website, basically link building. When looking at link building then its very important that we understand how this can be looked at and determined by Google. For this then its important that we have a little understanding of how things are calculated for each website. We can never be precise as details like this are never disclosed by Google. 

Links will be valued and credited individually however they will form a backlink profile for a website which will consist of all links pointing to the site. The best way to look at it is not on a individual backlink bases only but also as a total backlink rating for your profile. What this means is that with time as your backlinks get found then your full backlink profile grows and starts to show patterns which make it easy for Google to see and judge the quality of your backlinks as a whole.

Googles update penalizes certain types of backlinks that are commonly used to manipulate them in order to gain higher search engine rankings, Backlinks such as profile links, blog comments, link farms and low quality links in general. If your site relied heavily on these types of links then its likely you have been effected by this update. One thing to take away from this update is the need to diversify your backlink profile. Dont rely on one type of link source only.

Anchor text Links

Ive read a few discussions on anchor text links and how they have been effected. I think its very important that we understand that in the same way Google want us to use synonyms when working on our onsite optimization then the same should be followed with your anchor text too.  Its also very important to create raw http links as each website profile will also consist of a anchor text profile and if this looks unnatural then you could be penalized.

Vary your anchor text links but also concentrate on building raw http links, think of your website as building a profile on the internet and make it look real.

Low Quality Links

Some signs of low quality sites which should be avoided

• Too many adds on the website
• The site doesnt get updated, Lack of new unique content
• Lots of new content that doesnt make sense or autoblogs
• A website that doesnt get moderated
• Too many outbound links

Exact Match Domains

Ive also read many discussions on Exact match domains and how they have been effected. My honest opinion on this is that there really is no way Google can penalize a website for the domain name. This is unfair and if they did this then im certain many would contest them at court. One thing to note which is very clear to me is that many exact match domain name owners buy these domains for a quick ranking. With the purchase of the domain webmasters will also go and mass build backlinks using the same anchor text and quick backlink fix areas which have been penalized in this Google Penguin update.

Onsite Optimization

Onsite Optimization guidelines have remained the same. If you over optimize then you will get penalized, if you write content with links in it that are out of contents then you will also be penalized. If you are keyword stuffing then again a penalty. These areas we should already know and learned from previous Google Updates. You can read more on Matt Cutts Blog post.

Google Penguin Conclusion

The changes that Google Penguin brings to the search engines will certainly be tweaked by Google so dont be surprised to see rankings drop and fall. Our key focus should be on quality content and building a quality website profile. Keep your backlink profile and anchor text profile strong along with solid fresh content and you will have nothing to fear.
